Third Floor

The third floor houses most of the large exhibition and performance spaces at CalArts, though work is created and exhibited across the entire campus. Also on this floor is Steve's Café, our on-campus cafeteria dining space. The Main Gallery is the figurative center of campus and home to many events, such as our annual Halloween Party.

Dizzy Gillespie Digital Recording Studio (DRS)

The Dizzy Gillespie Digital Recording Studio (DRS) is a suite of connected rooms that function as a 48-channel, professional studio for recording, editing, mixing, and mastering. The control room and live room are acoustically treated and tuned for optimal sound isolation.

Jory Prum Experimental Sound Studio

The Jory Prum Experimental Sound Studio has equipment for computer-based composition, audio recording, sound synthesis, sound design, and film scoring. It is the primary studio for music students who work with processed and sample-based sound, and serves as a classroom for composition, sound-synthesis, and film scoring.

MOD Theater

The Walt Disney Modular Theater is a completely modular theater space with an overall audience and playing area of 4,480 square feet. Comprised of 4’x4’ sections which can be raised and lowered in increments, the inner walls are also composed of 340 4’x4’ removable panels, allowing for infinite reconfiguration and limitless design possibilities.

Modular Synth Studio

The Modular Synth Studio is home to the music school’s rare “Black Serge” analog modular synthesizer, as well as a 12-unit hybrid Blacet/Eurorack modular synthesizer, an Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module, a Moog Sub 37 Analog Synthesizer, and a rare Rob Hordijk Blippo Box.

This teaching/performance space provides an outstanding venue for small- and medium-sized ensembles, and is home to dozens of percussion instruments and modular setups for percussion rehearsals and performances of all kinds.

Roy O. Disney Concert Hall (ROD)

The Roy O. Disney Concert Hall (ROD) has adaptable acoustics, lighting, and sound and supports recitals, concerts, and multimedia and experimental presentations. The space also doubles as a live recording room. A livestream of ROD concerts is viewable through the link below.

Stevenson Blanche is a student-led exhibition space, managed by a committee of Art School BFA students. Students may invite other schools within CalArts for collaborative exhibitions, concerts, and performances.

Steve's Café serves a wide range of food choices, including vegan and vegetarian options. Seating ranges from intimate spaces to group tables—all intended to make the café a hub for the entire campus.

The Sharon Disney Lund Dance Theater

•School of Dance

The Sharon Disney Lund Dance Theater is a 50x70-foot space used exclusively for dance performances, rehearsals and classes. It features state-of-the-art wall-to-wall L'Air sprung flooring, covered with seamless black Lonstage. Retractable theater seating allows for many different staging configurations. Seating capacity is usually 100 to 125 persons, with a maximum capacity of 250.

Wave Cave

•School of Music

The WaveCave is a venue for music students to develop and exhibit interactive sound installations, video installations, interactive workshops, listening sessions, and all forms of sound art and sculpture. The WaveCave installation blog can be viewed through the link below.
