Ahmanson Residence Hall

While Ahmanson Hall provides apartment-style housing for 99 students in 17 shared suites. Each suite has either five or six bedrooms - each assigned to a single student - with a shared living room, kitchen and bathroom.

Broad and Annex Studios

School of Art

The Broad and Annex Studios are studio spaces for students in the MFA Program in Art. Students typically spend their first year in the Annex, and move to the Broads in their second year. Both studio blocks offer private individual spaces that are accessible 24/7 during the school year.

Butler Buildings

Institute

A set of smaller outlying buildings, the Butler Buildings hold spaces for stop motion, film production, theater, and creative writing.

Chouinard Residence Hall

Institute

Chouinard Hall houses approximately 340 students in predominantly double-occupancy rooms with bathrooms shared between two or three rooms.

Generator Building

Institute

A small structure built atop CalArts's generator, the Generator Building hosts several important offices, including The Center for Life and Work and the Office of International Students and Programs.

John Baldessari Studios Building & Crit Space

School of Art

The John Baldessari Studio Building, named after the famous conceptual artist and CalArts faculty member, has studios that are available to upper-level BFAs in the Program in Art. The building also has a large classroom and critique space.

Main Building

Institute

The Main Building is the largest building on campus and the primary structure. Within its 500,000 square feet, all of the disciplines at CalArts live side by side. On your way to check out a screening in the on-campus cinema? You may catch musicians performing next to an art gallery exhibition. Making a coffee run to Tatum? You might walk by dancers or actors rehearsing in the Los Angeles sunshine. The Main Building is an interdisciplinary, collaborative space.

Main Entrance

CalArts is built into a hillside on a 60 acre campus, and the Main Entrance is on the third floor. It is the gateway to the Main Building, where most things at CalArts happen—all under one roof, just as the Disneys imagined when they founded the Institute.

Outdoor Dance Theater

The CalArts Dance Floor is a nomadic platform for both performer and viewer. It measures 32x32 with a white marley floor and mirror exterior. Created to embed dance into the urban fabric of Los Angeles, the multi-purpose dance floor is designed to travel to sites in LA and beyond.

REDCAT

Institute

REDCAT, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts, is a multidisciplinary center for innovative visual, performing, and media arts. Founded by CalArts, REDCAT is located in the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex in downtown Los Angeles.

Wild Beast

The Wild Beast is a flexible indoor-outdoor music pavilion for performances and rehearsals. Named in honor of the seminal work of composer Morton Feldman—who used the term “wild beast” as a metaphor for the ineffable generative force in art—the pavilion houses a highly flexible performance and rehearsal space.
