Develop and teach a new course entitled Arts Pedagogy: Approaches to Teaching & Learning in the Classroom to undergraduate and/or graduate student artists. The course will cover foundational educational philosophy and philosophers, contemporary responses to learning and teaching in diverse classrooms, and practical tactics and strategies for teaching within the arts. The position also involves feedback, evaluation, and regular interaction with students.
This is a core course for a new minor and concentration in arts education. The Arts Education minor (for undergraduates) and concentration (for graduates) prepares students to develop their own personal teaching philosophy in preparation for classroom teaching at all levels. The undergraduate minor focuses on teaching K-12 students, and the graduate program addresses both K-12 and higher education. Students explore historical and contemporary theories of learning from a critical perspective, as well as develop fundamental skills in course planning and classroom management and working with today’s diverse student populations. The program requires two core academic courses (6 units), two electives (6 units), and one teaching practicum (3 units), for a total of 15 units.
Candidates should have an academic background in arts education, student development, development psychology or other related study, substantial teaching experience in arts education, We seek to employ faculty who can engage our diverse communities of learners at the highest levels of artistic endeavor and critical thinking. Responsibilities

Develop course content (syllabus, lectures, assignments, exercises, etc.) for a 3-unit course on Arts Pedagogy: Approaches to Teaching & Learning in the Classroom based on CalArts standards and Critical Studies (general education) requirements.

Teach one in-person course in the fall or spring semesters, or one online course in the summer semester.

Incorporate the use of Canvas Learning Management System into course delivery and as part of the course pedagogy.

Provide extensive student engagement through class discussion and feedback, assignment support, and in-person or online office hours.

Grade all students according to CalArts grading scale by or before the grading deadline.

Participate in the course evaluation process.

Collaborate with the program director and provost to ensure course(s) align with institutional goals.

Meet with institute staff, administrators, or faculty as needed.

Follow up with student incompletes if provided (at faculty discretion).

Terminal degree in education, arts education, an arts discipline, psychology, or related disciplines.

3-5 years teaching experience (K-12 or higher education classroom experience preferred).
