The Herb Alpert School of Music at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) seeks to appoint a full-time faculty member to its innovative community of creative music artists, with primary responsibilities in the School’s VoiceArts program and the capacity to contribute to the Jazz, Experimental Pop and Music Theory curricula on all degree levels. She/He/They must be an active artist-teacher with an established reputation as a vocal performer. The candidate should have a proven ability to teach a healthy vocal technique in a wide range of vocal styles to students of varying levels. Desirable areas of expertise include classical, jazz, pop, improvisation, and vocal experimentation.

 

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience and ability in teaching technology for voice recording and performing, and musical skills inclusive of Western and non-Western approaches. We welcome candidates who possess a demonstrated worldview and cultural competency to support teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students of varied backgrounds, capabilities, perspectives, social identities, and gender expressions.

 

Duties may include:

  • Giving individualized and small group instruction in vocal technique
  • Teaching classes in voice technique(s), performance and technologies, which could include jazz, improvisation, microphone and recording techniques, and other subjects, depending on the candidate’s area(s) of expertise,  
  • Teaching classes in basic music theory and musical skills from Western and non-Western perspectives,
  • Overseeing projects at the BFA, MFA, and DMA levels,
  • Serving as artistic and academic mentor for students who desire careers as voice performers,
  • Faculty service to the School of Music and the Institute and the Institute,
  • Routine mentoring of both students and junior colleagues,
  • Contributing regularly as a performer to concert activities in the School of Music,
  • Helping to guide curriculum development,
  • Recruiting for the School of Music.

Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree or higher and three years of college-level teaching experience.

Salary:

Reflecting its experimental mission and commitment to non-hierarchical pedagogy, CalArts does not have a conventional tenure-rank system but offers renewable multi-year contracts, a step-based faculty salary advancement plan (FSAP) and a merit program. Salary will be $65,000 - $81,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
