School of Dance Alumna Receives Third Princess Grace Honor

The Princess Grace Foundation-USA announced the 2009 winners of the Princess Grace Awards. School of Dance BFA alumna, Dawn Marie Stoppiello, has been recognized with the 2009 Special Project Award. Dawn Stoppiello and School of Music alumnus Mark Coniglio are co-founders and artistic directors of Troika Ranch, a multimedia performing arts company based in New York City. Dawn received her initial Princess Grace Foundation Award in 1987.  Her second accolade from the Foundation was in 2004. This current award is specifically bestowed to individuals who are previous Princess Grace Award winners.  Dawn, and the other recipients, will be honored at the Princess Grace Awards Gala in New York City in late October.

Dawn Stoppiello is a choreographer, dancer, and media artist who has dedicated her career to computer mediated live performance. For nearly twenty years she has created hybrid stage works that include choreography for bodies interfaced to computers through sensory systems. Upon graduation from CalArts, she became a member of the Bella Lewitzky Dance Company where she remained until 1992.

Founded in 1994, Troika Ranch and its co-founders Dawn and Mark have performed around the world.   Troika Ranch’s work Future of Memory was awarded the 2003 Time Out New York Dance Audience “Bessie” Award in New York City and an Honorable Mention at the 2004 Prix Ars Electronica CyberArts Competition in Linz, Austria. The company was awarded an “Eddy” award from Entertainment Design magazine in June 2005 for their achievements in “bridging the gap between the artist and technology.”

The Princess Grace Foundation-USA, a public charity, was formed after the death of Princess Grace (Grace Kelly) in 1982.  They award scholarships, apprenticeships, and fellowships to assist artists at the start of their careers. The Foundation cultivates a diverse group of nearly 500 artists to date who continue to advance the spectrum of performing arts with innovative, cutting-edge, and vibrant theater, dance, choreography, film, playwriting, and design.  Since the Foundation’s inception, more than 650 Awards have been given to recipients, totaling more than $7 million.
