February 23, 2012, Los Angeles, CA—Inspired by American gangster and film-noir dramas, A Splendid Death lures audiences into a fallen world where facades of luxury and masculinity disguise the desire for rebellion. The play, adapted by director Maureen Huskey from Jean Genet’s Splendid’s, uses fragments of Genet's prose and interviews to weave together a ritualistic tale of criminality and power.
A Splendid Death will be presented in E-407 on the CalArts campus (24700 McBean Parkway, Valencia, California 91355). Performance dates are Friday, March 9th at 8:00 pm, Saturday, March 10th at 1:00 pm and 8:00 pm, and Tuesday, March 13th through Saturday, March 17th at 8:00 pm. General admission is $10.00 and $2.00 for CalArts students and associates with valid ID. Reservations are available online at http://calarts.edu/calendar .
Set in the late 1930s, A Splendid Death tells the story of seven gangsters who are surrounded by police in a hotel. Huskey inserts Genet as a character within his own play in order to explore the deeper layers and complex questions he poses about life, death, and desire. Crafted as an experimental theater piece, A Splendid Death celebrates the life of one of the most provocative thinkers of our time.
