September 16, Valencia, CA--President Steven D. Lavine is pleased to announce that Bianca M. Roberts has been appointed Vice President and Chief Advancement Officer of California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
After a national search, Ms. Roberts joined CalArts on June 1st of this year as Executive Director of Development--stepping almost immediately into the top leadership role over CalArts' Development, Advancement Services, and Alumni Relations programs on an interim basis, when former Vice President Arwen Duffy moved to another institution in July. As Vice President and Chief Advancement Officer, Ms. Roberts will also oversee CalArts' Public Affairs and Board of Trustee relations functions, and serve as Secretary to the Board.
"In a very short time, she has shown herself to be a knowledgeable, imaginative, energetic and highly effective leader, both in her external relations with donors and her internal work with her own staff, and with faculty and staff leadership across the Institute," noted President Lavine. "Recognizing that we already had the right person in place, I appointed her Vice President and Chief Advancement Officer without the formality of another search." Ms. Roberts began in her current position on September 1st.
Before coming to CalArts, Ms. Roberts served as Senior Vice President for Development at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Previously, she was Executive Director of Development at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Prior to UCLA, she served in senior development roles at the Rand Corporation, Arts Toronto, and IMAX. In all, Ms. Roberts has more than twenty years experience in advancement as well as a wealth of experience in arts producing and presenting, especially in film. "Her background is a great match for CalArts," commented President Lavine. "I am confident she will play a key role in advancing CalArts' distinctive educational mission well into the future."
