LOS ANGELES, March 28, 2007 – The Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) and the California Institute of Arts (CalArts) are pleased to present Earthquakes & Aftershocks, Posters from the CalArts Graphic Design Program 1986–2004. The exhibition features posters created by graphic design students over nearly two decades. The 64 posters in the exhibition represent the visual sophistication, wit and experimental vision that typifies CalArts' design program. They will be seen for the first time in an American gallery.
Artwork will be available for viewing beginning Friday, May 4, 2007 until Sunday June 24, 2007. The opening reception will take place on Sunday, May 6 from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m.
Earthquakes & Aftershocks is a traveling exhibition recently arrived from France—following showings at Galerie du Clontre at Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre Museum. Organized by Paris-based CalArts alumnus, Jérome Saint-Loubert Bié, the show was conceived as a means to consider how a new emphasis on graphic design opens the way for further visual investigations. "The visual strength and inventiveness of these posters, as well as their contemporary and historical pertinence in the field of graphic design, proved to be of interest to many," said Saint-Loubert Bié. "Moreover, their function of announcing lectures, exhibitions, concerts, performances, and film screenings at CalArts extends, beyond design, to become significant as documentation of two decades of remarkable events spanning all artistic disciplines."
CalArts alumna and faculty member in the Graphic Design Program Louise Sandhaus, selected the pieces in the exhibition from thousands of posters--choosing works that were "distinctive because of their innovation and ability to generate a visual thrill."
With few exceptions, such as a work combining stencils and spray paint, the technique used for the artwork is silkscreen. The posters employ a wide variety of paper, ranging from newsprint and envelopes to bookbinding and wallpaper, and include distinctive typography often employing original typefaces. Viewed together, they provide a critical perspective on two decades of popular and political culture.
Limited edition silkscreen posters created for Earthquakes & Aftershocks will be available for sale at exhibition.
The 160-page catalog, edited by Jérome Saint-Loubert Bié and designed by CalArts alumni, Yasmin Khan and Jon Sueda, exquisitely reproduces all 64 posters in the original exhibition in Rennes, France and includes a comprehensive introduction to California design as well as four additional essays.
