Multi-Focus Performance: Piano, theory
Pianist Liam Viney is active as a soloist, collaborative artist and teacher, having performed regularly in Australia, the U.S., Europe and Israel. Born and raised in Australia, he obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree with First-Class Honours and the University Medal from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, where he studied with Natasha Vlassenko and Stephen Savage. Upon arriving in America he earned a Master of Music Degree, a Master of Musical Arts Degree, and a Doctorate of Music - all from Yale University’s School of Music, where he studied with pianist Boris Berman.
Liam has won competitions in both Australia and the U.S., including First Prize in the 2001 Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, where he also won the "People's Choice Prize" and prizes for "Best performance of an Australian Work", and "Best Performance of a Classical Sonata". The Courier Mail's review of the competition's final stage with orchestra described his playing as having "maturity and flair". Liam also won First Prize in the Yamaha Australian Youth Piano Competition, (the prize for which was a grand piano), the City of Sydney Piano Scholarship, the Queensland Piano Competition on two occasions, and the Connecticut Young Artists Piano Competition.
Liam has appeared as soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Youth Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony, the New Century Players and the CalArts Chamber Orchestra in concertos ranging from those of Mozart to Ligeti. He has given solo recitals in concert series and festivals such as the "New Paths" festival of New York, the "Keynote", "Celebrations", and "Kawai" series of Australia, and the "Tyalgum Festival". He also recorded solo programs for ABC FM radio's "Young Australia" program and 4MBS radio station. In May 2006 Liam shared two recital programs at a festival celebrating Russian music in Israel with pianist Boris Berman.
Liam's involvement with new music has led to performances with groups such as Australia's "Elision Ensemble", and the U.S.-based "Inauthentica". He was soloist with CalArts’ New Century Players in a performance of Berio’s “Points on the Curve to Find” at REDCAT, Disney Hall, Los Angeles. He has been featured in Melbourne's "Next Wave" festival, and the Brisbane Festival. He made a guest appearance with Vicki Ray in Los Angeles’ premiere piano series, Piano Spheres, to positive acclaim in the Los Angeles Times. Liam and his wife, Anna Grinberg, recently formed a two-piano team. They gave the world premiere of Ezra Laderman’s Interior Landscapes at Steinway Hall in New York City, and have commissioned other works from Marc Lowenstein and Shaun Naidoo.
Liam lives in Los Angeles where he has served on the faculty of the California Institute of the Arts since 2004, teaching piano, chamber music and music theory.
