The Sharon Disney Lund Dance Series -- Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz: "Ölelés"

End: Nov 6 2008 - 11:30pm

REDCAT: At once gripping, physically intense and genuinely lyrical, this award-winning extended duet for two men marks the first collaboration between acclaimed Catalan choreographers and performers Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz -- two of Spain’s most innovative young dance artists. Based on writer Sándor Márai’s 1942 masterpiece Embers, the high-velocity, nearly violent piece dramatizes the bitter reunion of two long-estranged friends, who look back to the fateful betrayal that shattered their bond 40 years earlier.

REDCAT: Perhaps best known for his live, unpredictable performances, John Bock blurs artistic convention, constructing a boundless world all his own. The artist often employs uncanny costumes, assemblages, and props that both reference and examine a range of social, political, philosophical, and aesthetic interests. Gravitating more recently towards multi-media works, Bock’s new project, Palms, co-commissioned by REDCAT and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, reflects the artist’s current interest in the narrative structure and genre conventions of film.

REDCAT: A darkly elegant evening of gorgeous melodies with a theatrical flourish. Ann Magnuson and Adam Dugas face off on vocals as Alexander Rannie and Mia Theodoratus strum their harps in this twisted match of musical one-upmanship. The quartet thrusts and parries with an arsenal of tunes ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime: psychedelic calls to prayer, Henry Purcell's Baroque art songs, Kraftwerk, Buffy St. Marie, Lee Hazlewood and Pink Floyd, as well as original songs by Magnuson and Dugas. New York art star-turned-L.A.

REDCAT: With each presidential election since 1984, Antoni Muntadas and Marshall Reese have compiled a new edition of Political Advertisement, a historical survey of television campaign spots from 1952 to the present. This compelling anthology, updated to include advertisements from this year’s presidential campaign, charts the selling of the American presidency in the media age. Muntadas and Reese weave a revelatory social and media history that shows the ways in which campaign advertising has become political strategy and manipulative marketing technique.

Known for his ongoing exploration of intra-cultural creative paradigms, Kusomo most recently staged a massive choreographic spectacle on and off the shores of Denpasar, Bali — a piece that involved more than 10 ships from different tribes and countries, and included a fantastical presentation about the evolution of cultures and the rumblings of volcanoes.

REDCAT: The famous Dutch collective plays an audacious live music score to accompany horror master F.W. Murnau’s Faust (1926) — the silent classic of German Expressionism that enacts Goethe’s chilling tale of an alchemist who bargains away his soul to the devil. One of the most important and prolific artists in Dutch music, the saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Willem Breuker formed the highly theatrical, seriously whimsical Kollektief in 1974.

Moving Figures: The Animated World of Robert Breer

Start: Nov 10 2008 - 8:30pm

End: Nov 10 2008 - 11:30pm

REDCAT: Robert Breer, one of America's foremost filmmakers for more than 50 years, pays a rare visit to Los Angeles to attend a multi-venue celebration of his work. A close colleague of Rauschenberg, Oldenburg and many other seminal artists of the '50s and '60s, Breer brought a comparably imaginative and rigorous appreciation for collage and pure form to the art of cinema. Throughout a body of more than 40 animated, and in ways "anti-animated," films, Breer celebrates cinema as a unique way of seeing, and the act of drawing as an endlessly expressive and unpredictable personal gesture.
