A late-blooming young woman, Louise, takes another person's discarded image from a photograph to create a cyber alter ego, Lorna Doone, in order to interact with her instant messaging lover, Orpheus, in an online Underworld.

REDCAT: Innovative Los Angeles writers and CalArts faculty members Steve Erickson, Douglas Kearney, Janet Sarbanes and Christine Wertheim read selections from their acclaimed work. Erickson is the celebrated author of seven novels and two books about American politics and popular culture, including the new novel Zeroville. Kearney was named notable new American poet by the Poetry Society of America last year. His most recent publication is a collection of poetry entitled Fear, Some. Sarbanes is the author of Army of One, a collection of short stories.

MUSIC: Performer/composer Andrew Tholl presents a concert of music by himself and others.
REDCAT: A quartet of Angeleno composer-performers pays homage to the city’s beloved dirty old man of poetry, Charles Bukowski, with a night of music performance and poetry based on some of his most incendiary writings. Performing under the direction of Joanne Gordon (Love Bukowski, Short Hairs and Long Shots), Martin Herman, Art Jarvinen, Amy Knoles and Marc Lowenstein dare the audience to feel as passionately as Bukowski did throughout his life and work.
MUSIC: Kerstin Fuchs, from Berlin, performs recent vocal music by Petros Ovsepyan, Kunsu Shim, Carlo Inderhees, Antoine Beuger and Michael Pisaro, with accompaniment by CalArts alumni Mark So (piano), Adam Overton (electronics) and Christa Graf (violin).

Directed by Djoko Walujo, Nanik Wenten and special guest artist B.R.M. Bambang Irawan, the ensemble also features the distinguished guest dancers Eko Supriyanto and Lina Bambang Irawan.

Focusing on the goals of community engagement and social change through art, this lively roundtable discussion features an eclectic group of artists, performers and writers who share their perspectives on trends and strategies used to engage diverse communities and both art and non-art institutions. Panelists include Karen Atkinson, Nancy Buchanan, Harry Gamboa, Nobuko Miyamoto and Amy Shimson-Santo.
MUSIC: An evening of world percussion featuring the CalArts World Percussion Ensemble and the Hands On'Semble, who will work through a kaleidoscope of rhythms, forms and soundscapes, blending a multitude of drumming styles from around the world into original works for percussion that consist of both highly fixed compositions and open structures for extended improvisations.

MUSIC: The CalArts African Music and Dance Ensemble, under the direction of Beatrice Lawluvi and Andrew Grueschow, will perform traditional repertoire from the Ewe and Dagomba people of Ghana, West Africa. This year the ensemble is fortunate to have Sulley Imoro, an extraordinary dancer from Ghana, joining them for the concert. His dynamic performances have inspired people the world over.

MUSIC: Recital of Medieval and Renaissance songs, as well as, American and Macedonian Folk tunes. Featuring Carmina Escobar, Mae Karthauser, Miroslav Tadic, and the band with no name playing original compositions.
CAP: The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra is one the few orchestral music programs available in the Los Angeles area that trains students to perform masterpieces from all periods of the orchestral and chamber music repertoire. Through a partnership with CAP, CalArts School of Music students have been coaching SCVYO sectionals and will be performing with the students. The program will include masterworks by D’vorak and Copeland.

MUSIC: The gamelan Burat Wangi (Fragrant Offering), under the direction of I Nyoman Wenten and Nanik Wenten, will present a concert of new dances and musical creations, a fusion between ancient traditions and contemporary ideas. The concert will be performed using the gamelan Gong Kebyar, the most modern Balinese orchestra. Special guests will include Swapan Chaudhuri, I Dewa Puta Berata, I Made Lasmawan, I Wayan Susila and Eko Supryanto.

CAP: Teenage musicians in the CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP) programs with Art-in-the-Park/Lalo Guerrero School of Music in Highland Park present an afternoon concert of Latin, choral, jazz, classical and world music works.
This screening will take place at the REDCAT Theater located at 631 West 2nd Street in downtown Los Angeles. For reservations please call the REDCAT’s Box Office at (213) 237-2800. This event is free and open to the public.

ART: Although Allan Kaprow’s tenure as a faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) was short, he created some very significant works with CalArts students in the early 1970s. CalArts students, alumni, and faculty are revisiting Kaprow’s history at CalArts and will reinvent Publicity (1970), which was originally produced with and for the CalArts student body. In this Happening, students built improvised wooden structures in the desert area of Vasquez Rocks near CalArts, while others videotaped them and immediately replayed it for the participants.
CRITICAL STUDIES: Staged reading of Robin Myrick's thesis play.
MUSIC: The New Millennium Brass presents music by Henze, Schickele, Didkovsky and others.

MUSIC: The CalArts Improvisation Ensemble, under the direction of Susan Allen, presents a concert of spontaneous and slightly deranged improvisations.
REDCAT: After casting painter and video artist Mania Akbari as the central figure of his groundbreaking Ten (2002), and then witnessing her outstanding debut as a feature film director in 20 Fingers (2004), Abbas Kiarostami urged Akbari to direct a sequel to Ten. In Dah be alaveh Chahar (10 + 4), though, circumstances are different: Mania is fighting cancer. She has undergone surgery; she has lost her hair following chemotherapy and no longer wears the compulsory headscarf; and sometimes she is too weak to drive.

REDCAT: Israeli-born, London-based architect Eyal Weizman talks about the architecture of exclusion, violence and control in the occupied territories of the Middle East. Using architecture as an "arena of speculation" about possible futures of Palestine, Weizman deals with how Israeli settlements and military bases can be reused, recycled or re-inhabited by Palestinians, at the moment that it is unplugged from the military and political powers that charge it.

CAP: Each semester, CAP, in partnership with Inner-City Arts, brings animation education to an elementary school in Los Angeles. This event will feature an original collaborative animated film conceived, edited and directed by fifth graders under the guidance of CalArts School of Film/Video Assistant Dean and Character Animation faculty Leo F. Hobaica, Jr. and CalArts School of Film/Video students and alumni.
This event is free and open to the public.
The screening will take place at El Sereno Elementary School.
CAP: The event will celebrate the publication of an anthology of writings by William Hart High School E.S.L. students participating in this CAP creative writing program. Students will be reading and performing a selection of texts written during this year-long creative writing program. This program is a collaboration among the CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP), William S. Hart High School, the CalArts School of Critical Studies and the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations.
THEATER: Enter the off-kilter world of Linda Carvel, fictitious daughter of the famed New York ice cream mogul. A heavy dollop of puppet tragicomedy, a sprinkle of kitsch-surrealism and more than the recommended daily allowance of weird.
