Creative Theorist/Musical Scholar

Full-time or Part-time position

 

The California Institute of the Arts, School of Music seeks a creative musical scholar of national repute to develop and teach undergraduate core-curriculum courses, such as music theory and musicianship skills, history, literature, analysis, and related areas, and with the ability to also supervise graduate, research seminars and projects, contributing to possible new, advanced degree programs. Areas of research expertise, like those represented in the school, may be quite diverse, such as avant-garde or experimental music, world music cultures, improvisation (including jazz), interactive musical technology, speculative theory, or specialized areas in Western music. The person selected will be expected to help develop the School's core curriculum for undergraduates with keen sensibility to what is needed for young musicians to succeed in the rapidly evolving professional environment requiring broad, flexible skills and understanding the heterogeneous nature of styles and cultures. Leadership and consensus building skills applicable to curriculum development are essential. Experience as a performer and/or composer would be helpful. CalArts is especially interested in candidates who have developed innovative methods of research and/or analysis and original areas of study.

Schools of Music, Visual Art, Theater, Dance, Film/Video and Critical Studies interact in a lively, interdisciplinary atmosphere. The School of Music offers studies in instrumental and vocal performance, composition (instrumental and computer music and new media), world music (Indian, African, Indonesian), jazz and African American music, musical arts, music technology and is committed to developing curriculum integration among these various programs. Applications should include 1) a detailed vita, 2) a minimum of three letters of recommendation, 3) a list of courses or subject areas previously taught or within the candidate's ability to teach and 4) appropriate samples of creative and/or research and development work. Interview: Two or more candidates will be invited to CalArts to teach. Faculty committees and the administration will interview the finalists. Application deadline is March 15, 2006 for earliest start date, September 1, 2006. However, position will remain open until filled.
