What is the philosophy of the CalArts' School of Art?
CalArts emphasizes conceptually oriented, idea-based art practices. We also constantly strive to push the limits of what might be considered art, photography, or graphic design, and encourage our students to experiment at the edge of their chosen discipline.

Facilities

 

The School of Art's production facilities integrate both traditional and new technologies to encourage creativity across a wide variety of artmaking métiers. Lab directors, aided by student staff, are available to provide instruction and guidance to ensure that all facilities are used effectively and safely.

Notable alumni

 

Nayland Blake (MFA 84) has been included in many exhibitions in museums around the world. He shows with Mathew Marks in New York.

 

Ross Bleckner (MFA 73) is a painter whose work has been shown extensively in the U.S. and in Europe. The Guggenheim Museum in New York mounted a retrospective exhibition in 1995.

Undergraduate general studies

 

School of Critical Studies

 

A CalArts education is based on both artistic and intellectual rigor. To ensure that each undergraduate has the broad knowledge and cultural sophistication needed for successful arts careers in today's world, all candidates for the BFA degree must complete the Critical Studies Undergraduate Requirements in addition to coursework in their individual programs.
